Back to Topcharlie Shreveport Jun 27, 2010 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ 1965 model still cookin\' My mom bought my dad a PK in the 60's. Paid around $60 for it...almost a weeks wages back then for a housepainter(and w/ 5 kids!). Bet my dad almost #$&! Dad is 80 now; mom still w/ him, fightin' like cat's and dawgs at times! except about 'ol PK. I'd like to have his ol SEASONED PK, but want to have him around more. Don't know if I want to fork out $3oo for one---maybe if they can bury it w/ me! If they are still what they were back then---go ahead and get one---your grandchildren will appreciate you leaving it around. My grandmother had a smaller version--think it was made in Little Rock--I burnt it thru with redoak after I had it for about 8 years--used it for fire and cooking.
Skippy Houston, Texas Jun 25, 2008 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Good This my second PK. The first one lasted 35 years.
Gene Johnson Louisiana Jun 7, 2012 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Best Grill Ever!! This is by far the best grill I have ever seen! I bought my PK from a friend of mine in 1981 for $20.00. I don't think he had any idea what he had. But something told me to buy it and I'm sure glad I did. My wife and I were married in 1981 and it's the only grill we've ever owned or used. All I've ever replaced were the top and bottom grills a few times. That's an extremely small price to pay for what you get in return. I love my grill and I use it every week.
Ronnie Smith Huntsville, Ar Apr 5, 2016 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Simply The Best! I bought my Mother one of these in 1972! My sister was so impressed with it, she went and bought her one. I still use my Mom's and it goes with camping and we camp all of the time! This charcoal grill will do it all from grilling hamburgers to smoking a whole chicken to perfection! They are like a cast iron skillet, it will last you a lifetime! These are made of cast aluminum and they will not burn out ! Thank You for still making a Great American made product that you can be proud of!
No Nickname Aitkin, MN Sep 30, 2008 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ The last grill I'll ever buy. I really like this grill. I'm very happy with the way it controls the heat and cooks the food. I like the hinged grill, the stand is sturdy(could be a bit taller), just about everything.
Now that I've used it a while, here's a list of improvements I'd recommend:
1) I added a thermometer to the lid about 1.5" off the grill in the middle. Essential for slow cooking, and I'm a bit disappointed it didn't come with it.
2) You have to get down on your hands and knees to see the lower vents while you're adjusting them. Kind of awkward and embarassing when you're trying to tell your friends what a cool grill you have. I'm going to have to devise a better way. Maybe a mirror.
3) For the money, the grill and lower grate should be stainless. Then it would truly last forever.
I had Grandparents over for chicken, and they told me they had the same grill back in the 60's. They loved it and had it until it blew away (more likely they got looted) in one of the hurricanes in the 90's. They're from Texas.
Mike San Diego Jan 19, 2011 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Simply the Best My dad bought this grill at an Air Force Base Exchange in 1965 and I have been cooking on it since then. It came with a cast iron grate that had a high ridge about 1/5 of the distance forward of the back edge that perfectly assisted in stacking charcoal. That was the first component to go, but that was in the early 1980's. Since then, I have replaced the grate and grill twice. The manufacturer used to be a family enterprise in Arkansas. I am pleased to see the product continuing to be produced. I have cooked everything on this baby! We cook put at least twice a week. I often cook steaks and chicken at the same time and am able to control the heat perfectly with the vents. I re-use briquets often because I close the vents as I remove the food. My chicken breasts are always cooked evenly and moist. My family won't go out for food I can cook on my grill because they say ours is better than we could get in a restaurant. Guest ask me how I do it. I tell them I use my Portable Kitchen and let God do the rest. I've been using the same grill for 45 years, so the cooking is as second nature as breathing. When I'm overseas, I have to use a regular kettle grill that is popular in the states that really just does not cook as well as the Portable Kitchen. As for the debate over gas vs. charcoal, my gas buddies never turn down the opportunity to eat anything that comes off my charcoal kitchen. The charcoal is ready in about the same time that is required to properly heat up a gas grill. And with the proper use of mesquite wood and chips, the flavor of anything coming off the grill makes the small amount of time spent in ash removal seem insignificant. If my Portable Kitchen ever wears out, I will promptly buy another. However, I expect to pass this one down in my will. It continues to be one of the simplest and greatest pleasures in my life.
Brenda the painter League City, TX Jul 4, 2007 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ This is my third portable kitchen! I ha I got my first grill about thirty something years ago. I used it until the grates were burnt completely up, however the cast aluminum part was still good as new. My parents had one and gave it to me, and I used theirs up too. Recently I was looking for spare grates on line and discovered that you all were making the grills again and it was like an old friend had returned to my life and that I ordered a new portable kitchen. I still have my most recent "old" one and don't intend to part with it now that I know that I can get parts for it.
Thomas Frazee Indiana Jun 8, 2011 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Made in the USA In a time when most things purchased are foreign made, and cheaply so... the PK is a refreshing change. I absolutely love this grill. My brother-in-law is an amazing griller and motivated me to make the switch from propane to charcoal. I stumbled across this grill while scouring the internet for quality charcoal grills. I am so happy that I found this grill. I have grilled three times on it so far and it did NOT disappoint. This grill is awesome. I use only natural charcoal, and plan to mix in some hardwood on occasion. I use a chimney starter to avoid starting fluid. The result is amazing. The food I have had so far off this grill has convinced me that switching to charcoal was the right thing to do. I had a large party for my son's graduation and received lots of compliments on the grill and the food. There really is only one thing that I would change about this grill. I would like the stand to be taller. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing. If you are considering this grill, you should do it. I have NO buyers remorse and have already told my family that my oldest son will receive this grill when I am gone. He is 19 and I am only 41! :)
JBo South Carolina Sep 4, 2007 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Portable Kitchen 40+ years old! My father gave me and my husband a PK grill for our birthdays...he has had his PK grill for over 40 years and has ONLY had to replace the grilling and charcoal grates! My Dad cooks EVERYTHING on this grill! It is perfect for both indirect and direct grilling, it is easy to clean and cannot be destroyed. [...]
Tom McBee Little Rock, Arkansas Jul 6, 2011 | ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Smoke like the Big Boys with a smaller Grill Love my PK Grill. I can smoke anything on it and the temp control is the answer.
It's air tight because of the way its made. Just cook on it a few times and learn the 8 controls and you will be amazed. I love to take it on the road on vacation, camping or hunting because it breaks down and requires very little space. I put the grill part in a big black leaf bag by lifting it off it's stand and then breaking down the four legs. It takes about 5 minutes and can fit into your trunk if you don't have a truck. I have an annual canoe float trip and the PK fits into my canoe and never misses a trip plus the smoked trout, burgers or steaks make the float great.
Thanks,
Tom McBee
