A removable water pan mounted near the base of the cabinet can be filled with your favorite marinades to add more flavor and keep foods fall-off-the-bone tender. The Good,Bad, and Ugly Code ERL

The smoker has been really good over the first 3-4 smokes. Over the past few smokes, the unit was making an odd clicking sound and shutting itself off. During the most recent cook the unit went off and a code of ERL was displayed. The smoker has not done anything since then except show that code. I am very disappointed as this was my husbands fathers day gift, hardly 90 days old, and it is all ready useless. He has taken proper care of the unit and has followed the manual for maintenance etc. exactly as instructed. Pit boss offers a 5 year warranty but we can not seem to get a hold of anyone to help with this issue, so the smoker just sits there as an expensive garage space filler.

Great smoker when it works.

I have owned this for just over 6 months, I love it when it works. I have replaced the temperature sensor, and the control panel since owning it for that short period of time. The new control panel that just came, didn't even work when I got it and immediately gave me an erL code. I am extremely frustrated with this thing at this point, I would suggest going another route but it looks like all of their pellet smokers use the same temperature sensor and control panel. The only good thing I can say at this point is that the parts have been free of charge, but it has been weeks of time in between where I can't use it, and this control panel issue has been almost three weeks of it out of commission. SO, buyer beware.

Good smoke, holds temp very well

I have two PB's. A 340 Pellet Grill and the Series 3 Vertical Smoker. Both are fantastic. Since this is for the Vertical I thought I would review it here. Picked it up at Walmart. While looking at this I was also looking over the Series 5. The Series 5 is wider and has more room. I do not really have any huge temp swings on this. If I set it at 250 it stays between 240-260. Puts off lots of smoke and there is a lot of room for multiple items on the shelves. However, since this one is not as wide as the Series 5 some items will have to be trimmed (spare ribs) and when I did chicken wings my tray was a tad bit too long to fit. Maybe I should've gone with the Series 5 but this does what it is supposed to do. I have used Competition Blend, Charcoal Blend, Apple, Hickory and more as pellet fuel and all are great. Make sure to keep water in the water pan (I line mine with foil for easy clean up). It was easy to assemble in about 45 minutes by myself. We have cooked on it every weekend since we got it and it has not disappointed. I am glad I have two options, a grill and a smoker. Have gone burgers on the vertical but those turn out better on the pellet grill. Pros: Easy set up/assembly No major temp swings Good smoke Easy clean-up Set it and forget it (but do check on it from time to time) Huge pellet hopper The model I have seems to have a "guard/shield" over the internal temp probe. This is GOOD as it keeps things from dripping on it which may affect temperatures (I am not sure but I don't think the older models have a guard on the probe). Cons: The temp probe that comes with it seems to be 50 degrees off. I have used multiple external temp probes and the one that comes with it is always 40-50 degrees higher than my other 2 which feed to my phone. Controller is located at the bottom so when removing meat make sure juices do not drip on it (I really don't see how it could be moved but keep that in mind as one time when removing burgers they dripped all over the controller). No other cons I can think of. If you are considering a vertical smoker this is the one you should get. Or for a wider fit try the Series 5. Currently our store has not had any vertical smokers in since I bought this one so I assume they are pretty popular. Finally, another good thing is when you purchase this you get a discount code for the website. I ordered a cover for mine because the store did not have any for this model and it was very cheaply priced on the Pit Boss website with my discount code.

Junk

I bought this smoker after reading the reviews thinking it was a great purchase for my family. As it turns out, I would have been better off spending the extra money on Traeger. I have had nothing but issues and has ruined many family outings, the electronics and sensors are complete junk. One purchase I wish I could take back.

Rough start great finish !!

Two weeks after purchase the control board screen warped & lost display, contacted customer service I was asked for a picture of the board & was sent a new board. Due to the Covid the part was back ordered in the mean time I continued to use the smoker with very good results using a probe to monitor the temperature. I also replaced the Pitboss logo from the top of the door with a temperature gauge from another grill. Both thermometers stayed within 10-20 degrees of what I had set the dial to. The new control board has finally arrived will replace it when the old board dies completely. All in all Great smoker & excellent customer service BTW got 3 free bottles of Pittmaster rubs w/the new control board.

Smokey Success (3 smokes in butt, ribs, burgers)

Hopefully a useful review. I recently lost a great friend, my old wood chip cabinate smoker. Loved that little guy. He gave plenty of smoke and predictable performance. Unable to get the same model, I made the move to my first Pit Boss/ first pellet grill. I was worried about level and quality of smoke and was put off by many reviews, but as life without a smoker is no life at all, I decided to take the plunge. I use my smokers at least weekly, but am busy with a sack full of kids and a demanding job, so my dream of a stick burner is still 5 kids and a retirement away. I am three smokes in (Butt, ribs, burgers) will update this down the road) and here is what I have found. First: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Especially if you haven't had a pellet smoker before. I ran into a relative with a similar model, which helped immensely. It's a different experience all together. Assembly: Not terrible, but definitely a lot more than I expected. Took me maybe 45 min. Burn off: Again, read the instructions. Do your burn off, it's quick, painless, and smells awesome. Temperature control: As opposed to many smokers, this unit offers temperature controls on a dial that has increments of 25 to 50 deg increase or decrease. Some people complain about this, but most anybody that smokes has about 4 varying temperatures they would actually use regularly. When you get into the grill features, that's where you may wish you had more control. Worked ideally for the three differing smokes I've tried, including cheese filled burgers. Smoke setting; I love... Love the smoke setting. This grill will run with smoke at 160 degrees. I used this to add extra smoke flavor without cooking too quickly. Made my burgers and ribs awesome. Cook temp: the cabinate vacilantes widely between a little lower than your desire cook temp. While heating it can get quite a bit higher than your set temp. This is because it heats in cycles. It burns pellets to raise the temp, then circulates the hot air/smoke. Don't freak out. These variations are no different than what my stick burner buddies describe to me and had no ill effect on smoke time/quality. Smoke flavor: Nothing is going to give you smoke as powerful as a charcoal/wood offset, but this does pretty great. If you like food so smokey you want it in your sinuses for days afterwards, this isn't the way to go. But we had great smokey food that was more than smokey enough, especially when we used the smoke only setting. Other thoughts: I have a lot more to try with this, but I found that what we made, the settings we used, and the accessories we used (temp probe etc.) didn't disappoint. My crew, who loves smoked food, had nothing negative to say. One note. If you are one that works with drippings from your smoked meats (like me) oddly this smoker produces very little in the ways of drippings. To me this smoker/grill is a win. Will update again in a few more smokes.

The Skinny:

  • Temperature range between 150–450 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Large-capacity hopper for extended cooks
  • Large window to monitor food
  • Designed with sturdy materials

Things We Love

Temperature-control Features

You can’t have low-and-slow cooking without consistently low temperatures. That’s why the guys at Pit Boss designed their Copperhead Series pellet smokers with easy-to-use controls that let you pinpoint exact heat levels within the 150–450-degree temperature range. When you’ve got guests to entertain or food to prepare, there’s nothing better than the 10 temperature presets and startup and cooldown cycles found on the Copperhead smokers.

It’s when you’re cooking, though, that these features really shine. Several components of these Pit Boss smokers — the external heat indicator, included meat probe with digital LED readouts, and large viewing window — allow you to stay informed without opening the door and letting precious heat or smoke escape (the sturdy door latch deserves some praise, too). If you need to open the door to show off the goods or just want an extra boost of flavorful smoke, there’s also a prime function that burns a new batch of pellets with a 300-watt ignitor and fan-forced draft.

Durable & Efficient Design

At this point, you might be wondering why Pit Boss calls these smokers Copperheads. It has nothing to do with snakes (no judgement if smoked snake is on the menu at your next cookout) — instead, the name comes from the beautiful hammertone copper finish of these pellet cookers. Underneath that attractive finish is a cold-rolled, double-walled steel body with high-heat coating, giving Copperhead Series smokers the durability for years of cooking.

But Pit Boss also values an efficient smoking experience, so Copperhead models come with a slide-out grease tray and ash pan for simple cleanup. Moving the smoker around is even easier thanks to two front swivel caster wheels and two more in the rear that can lock into place. For those who’d like to give water-smoking a try, the included water pan can be filled with marinades or other liquids to provide extra flavor and moisture. Trust us, you’ll want to give it a try.

Large-capacity Hopper

Did we mention these pellet smokers can cook a whole bunch of food? The two Copperhead Series models have different pellet capacities and cooking areas, but the smaller 3 Series edition shouldn’t be overlooked. With the Pit Boss Copperhead 3 Series, you get 800 square inches of cooking space across four adjustable racks and a hopper that can hold up to 35 pounds and smoke for 18 hours. The Pit Boss Copperhead 7 Series, meanwhile, boasts 2,059 square inches of cooking area, six porcelain-coated racks, a 60-pound hopper, and a smoke time of up to 24 hours!

No matter which model you choose, the hopper has a side window to check fuel levels, a hinge door for quick refills, and a clean-out door to empty the pellets or change flavors. Just keep in mind that the Copperhead Series works best with Pit Boss pellets.

Things to Consider

If your goal is to smoke at low temperatures for an extended period of time without refilling your fuel, the Pit Boss Copperhead Series is a great option for you. But we know you may have more questions about these smokers, which is why our BBQ experts are standing by at 1-877-743-2269 to help you make the right decision.

When will my item arrive?

Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.

  • Most freight products ship on a pallet
  • Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
  • We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.

For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:

Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.

For carriers that deliver without an appointment:

Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
