Buy it, and but it here

Great smoker. Huge hopper allowed for 22-hour cook with no refilling of pellets (which would have been easy anyway thanks to great design). Consistent temp throughout. Perfect, tender, juicy pork was the result. Didn't really even need to pull it; just gave it a mean look, and it fell right apart. Have used at least a dozen times already (bought 2 months ago), and I love it. Great product! Additionally, bbqguys is only place to buy this stuff. First smoker came with some relatively minor damage. I let them know (email with a couple pics), and they shipped me a new one immediately with no questions asked. I buy all bbq-related stuff here now. Easy to get someone on phone when I have questions, and they're always super helpful and knowledgeable. Can't recommend enough.

Controler

I've had my series 3 vertical for a year or so. Never had a problem with it. This leads to my only complaint. I see a lot of folks taking out the controller and replacing it with a RecTec digital controller wit bluetooth and wifi. I have a great little smoker, particularly on my apartment patio. Why do I need to go to another company to get a better controller?

Super Easy To Use

So, this is my first ever smoker. Did a little research and I definitely didn't want to break the bank. The PitBoss was very easy to use: assemble, prime it, load in pellets, set temperature, put in meat and you're smoking. I tested it out with some baby back ribs...oh man, delicious. Now, you're not going to impress the bbq pit masters or the smoking elitist...but you're also not maning the smoker every 30 minutes to make sure the temperatures right. I think this was an excellent choice to get my feet wet. Highly recommend for a newbie.

I (edited) LOVE THIS SMOKER

From the time I received it to today, I love it. Even customer support is great. Part of my order did not get shipped for some reason but as soon as I called customer support took care of it and went over and above my expectations. No worries if you are thinking about ordering this as your next smoker.

MIXED FEELINGS

I've had this for ~1.5 years. When it works, I'm very pleased. You can make absolutely delicious smoked meats and vegetables easily. Problems: 1) Numerous times I have started the smoker (as per instructions: started on smoke, then when smoking started, closed door and turned temp up) and returned 30 minutes later to find that it had shut off. Unplugged unit, re-started, and it works fine. This probably happened 1 in 3 times I have used it. 2) I now have a smoker that is dead. So I'm trouble shooting it to see if it's a fuse or the control unit. The engineers who designed this unit could hardly have made it more difficult to go through this process. - remove chimney - turn unit on side, remove door - turn unit upside down, remove drip pan - remove heat shield - remove control board Here is where it gets really fun (remember, this is a smoker that's been in use for over a year, so this is a dirty job): Next, we will take the four screws out of the back of the control board. Once the back of the control panel is open you will see a green box on the back of the circuit board with a zip tie around it. Carefully remove the zip tie and open the fuse box to check the fuse. If the fuse is NOT blown, it is most likely your control board needs to be replaced. If the fuse IS blown, you will need to replace the fuse and then test which component is causing it to blow. You can purchase a couple of fuses at a hardware store, or we can send you some fuses if you do not have access to a hardware store. They need to be 5-amp fast blow appliance fuses. Replace the fuse on the control board, but do not power on the unit until you have disconnected the igniter, the fan, and the auger motor from the control board. The wires are white (igniter), yellow (fan), and red (auger). Then plug the smoker in. You can do this while the unit is still upside down, but you will most likely need an extension cord. Power on the unit to see if the fuse blows. If it does, you need a new control board. If it does not, unplug the smoker, and connect the fan (yellow) wires. Plug in the smoker and power on. If the fuse blows, you need a new fan. If it does not, unplug the smoker and connect the auger motor (red) wires. Plug in the smoker and power on to see if the fuse blows. If it does, then you need a new auger motor. If it does not, unplug the smoker and connect the igniter wires (purple/white to white/white), and then power on the smoker to see if the fuse blows. If it does, you need a new igniter. Once you know if any component is blowing the fuse, email or call us so we can get that part ordered for you. So, if you think this type of process is reasonable for an owner to deal with, then proceed with your Pit Boss smoker purchase. I am in the midst of this process at the moment, and the tab next to this one on my browser is "best pellet smokers"...

Unreliable Smoker

I bought this smoker and used it for a couple of years. I bought it because of the vertical design and capacity. It was my first pellet smoker. I would not recommend it or the company that makes it. It was poorly designed. First, the temperature control fluctuated wildly making it hard to cook brisket and other things where maintaining the correct temperature is important. Second, the auger chute clogged up quite often...usually right in the middle of cooking. I learned to put only a small amount of pellets in the hopper and to try to use them all up before the end of the cook. Otherwise, the pellets would absorb moisture when the smoker was idle and clog the auger chute the next time I tried to use it. Finally, the auger motor must have stripped a gear or something because it quit working altogether. Believe me there nothing like trying to smoke something for a bunch of people coming to dinner only to have the smoker quit heating because of a clogged pellet auger. Cleaning out the pellet bin and trying to clear the chute into the firebox was no small task involving draining the pellet bin and scooping out compacted pellets, vacuuming out the bin and chute and lots of time consuming frustration! I learned the hard way: Pellets absorb moisture and clog the auger passage...especially if you must leave the smoker outside all of the time (mine was covered but outside). Buy a smoker that only holds a few pounds of pellets and one where the pellets can be drained easily and the auger passage easily cleared. Also, I lean away from complicated Wi-Fi systems built into the smoker that can break or malfunction. There are inexpensive external systems that can monitor grill and meat temperature that are not built into the smoker. The Copperhead smoker now resides at the dump ground. I It was unreliable for someone like me that smokes a lot for dinner guests. Happy smoking, but I recommend getting another brand and design

Junk

Want to like this smoker.... but I'm about done. One my 3rd control board. This last one actually melted. Not from high heat. That hasn't been possible! Right before this one went out, so did the igniter. Haven't been able to cook over 225° since it came out of the box. Tired of being a mechanic for Pit Boss.

Great price for a great smoker!

When I got the smoker it was dented. Called customer service, showed them pictures and they sent out another. Since then it has been VERY easy to use. I have tried many meats and they turned out amazing. I'm a beginner and feel very confident with this product. Great price for what you get!

Expert Review

The Skinny:

  • Temperature range between 150–450 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Large-capacity hopper for extended cooks
  • Large window to monitor food
  • Designed with sturdy materials

Things We Love

Temperature-control Features

You can’t have low-and-slow cooking without consistently low temperatures. That’s why the guys at Pit Boss designed their Copperhead Series pellet smokers with easy-to-use controls that let you pinpoint exact heat levels within the 150–450-degree temperature range. When you’ve got guests to entertain or food to prepare, there’s nothing better than the 10 temperature presets and startup and cooldown cycles found on the Copperhead smokers.

It’s when you’re cooking, though, that these features really shine. Several components of these Pit Boss smokers — the external heat indicator, included meat probe with digital LED readouts, and large viewing window — allow you to stay informed without opening the door and letting precious heat or smoke escape (the sturdy door latch deserves some praise, too). If you need to open the door to show off the goods or just want an extra boost of flavorful smoke, there’s also a prime function that burns a new batch of pellets with a 300-watt ignitor and fan-forced draft.

Durable & Efficient Design

At this point, you might be wondering why Pit Boss calls these smokers Copperheads. It has nothing to do with snakes (no judgement if smoked snake is on the menu at your next cookout) — instead, the name comes from the beautiful hammertone copper finish of these pellet cookers. Underneath that attractive finish is a cold-rolled, double-walled steel body with high-heat coating, giving Copperhead Series smokers the durability for years of cooking.

But Pit Boss also values an efficient smoking experience, so Copperhead models come with a slide-out grease tray and ash pan for simple cleanup. Moving the smoker around is even easier thanks to two front swivel caster wheels and two more in the rear that can lock into place. For those who’d like to give water-smoking a try, the included water pan can be filled with marinades or other liquids to provide extra flavor and moisture. Trust us, you’ll want to give it a try.

Large-capacity Hopper

Did we mention these pellet smokers can cook a whole bunch of food? The two Copperhead Series models have different pellet capacities and cooking areas, but the smaller 3 Series edition shouldn’t be overlooked. With the Pit Boss Copperhead 3 Series, you get 800 square inches of cooking space across four adjustable racks and a hopper that can hold up to 35 pounds and smoke for 18 hours. The Pit Boss Copperhead 7 Series, meanwhile, boasts 2,059 square inches of cooking area, six porcelain-coated racks, a 60-pound hopper, and a smoke time of up to 24 hours!

No matter which model you choose, the hopper has a side window to check fuel levels, a hinge door for quick refills, and a clean-out door to empty the pellets or change flavors. Just keep in mind that the Copperhead Series works best with Pit Boss pellets.

Things to Consider

If your goal is to smoke at low temperatures for an extended period of time without refilling your fuel, the Pit Boss Copperhead Series is a great option for you. But we know you may have more questions about these smokers, which is why our BBQ experts are standing by at 1-877-743-2269 to help you make the right decision.

Question:
Hello, can this smoker be unplugged once the pellets are ignited and start to burn or does it need to stay plugged in during the entire cooking time? Was This Helpful?
Answers:

The smoker needs to stay plugged for the entire cook. Power is needed for the fan and auger to operate.

Asked by John | Answered by jim.karen.b

It has to stay plugged in for the entire cook, because the temperature fluctuates.

Asked by John | Answered by harrygoldsmithny

It needs to stay plugged in so the fan continues to feed the fire with oxygen, and when more pellets are needed to keep the temp up it turns the auger and ignites them with the ignition element.

When will my item arrive?

Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.

  • Most freight products ship on a pallet
  • Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
  • We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.

For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:

Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.

For carriers that deliver without an appointment:

Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
