Wood-Burning Fire Pits, Tables, & Bowls
A wood burning fire pit is the closest you can get to a campfire on your patio. If you want an open flame, the sound of crackling embers, intense heat, and the smoky aroma of burning wood, there is no substitute. Wood-burning fire pits, wood-burning fire bowls, and wood-burning fire pit tables give you that real wood fire. These fire pits are usually inexpensive, easy to install, easy to use, and act as a natural focal point for your outdoor space.
There are several ways to incorporate wood-burning fire into your space:
Wood-Burning Fire Pits
A wood fire pit is typically a straight-sided, round, or square firebox. Some are bowl-shaped. These are easy to set up and use – if you know how to start a fire, you can use a wood-burning fire pit!
Wood-Burning Fire Pit Tables
Similar to fire pits, fire pit tables are taller, or elevated, and provide a flat surface for placing beverages and other non-flammable items. Fire pit tables are great for entertaining guests.
Wood-Burning Fire Bowls
Some fire pits are bowl-shaped and present a more elegant appearance than a “regular” fire pit. Many have elaborate designs cut into them and some have half-round lids with designs cut in the steel to give you a dramatic flaming design.
More Wood Burning Firepit Considerations
Other things to keep in mind when you’re using a wood-burning fire pit.
- You will need to light the fire. There are fire pit starters and fuel available to help with this. We strongly recommend against using any kind of lighter fluid.
- Unlike gas fire pits, there is no quick and easy cut-off valve to make the wood stop burning. You’ll need to extinguish your fire completely before leaving the area. Once the wood has cooled and there are no burning or smoldering embers, you’ll want to clean the ash out of the fire pit before starting your next fire (and be sure to dispose of the ash carefully only when you’re certain that it is 100% cool).
- Many fire pits are available with spark screens to reduce the risk of hot ashes or burning embers escaping. We recommend using these, and you’ll find that they don’t diminish the fire pit experience.
- The heat from burning fire pit wood can be significantly more intense than a gas fire pit. This will make the metal structure much too hot to touch, so placement (especially when children are nearby) needs to be made with this in mind.
- If you’re planning on putting your fire pit on a wood or plastic deck, it’s important to first read our Fire Pit Safety article, which includes specific information about protecting your deck from potential hazards.
