Strong and sturdy. Fairly easy to put together. Haven't used it too much yet, but it appears it will work great.

I love that this is a vertical cooker without the typical low temps on the ends of the cooking chamber most "horizontal" cookers have. I also like the high/low temp trigger points of the controller are so much closer than everyone else's. I use this cooker at least 2-3 times a month. I also used it back when I was competing. However, this is an un-insulated box and so all of the exterior gets scalding hot. This includes the door handle. It also has caused my entire door to slightly warp while cooking letting heat and smoke out around the edges. I have to keep the door mechanism adjusted to try and get a tight seal. I like that it is on wheels so I don't have to keep t exposed to the weather when not cooking on it. The exhaust holes on the side whiteout a chimney means that the smoke goes every which way coming out and gets exhaust grease all over that side of the unit. It also means there is not a strong current inside the box and you can/will get smoke coming out of the grease drip opening.
Temp control is awful. I set it to 200, but it heated to 380. Produces hardly any smoke. The electronics that control everything are absolutely terrible. Do not waste a dime on this garbage.
I got the xxl smoker for free from my neighbor it was in a non-functioning state I was able to diagnose and repair the auger motor clean the auger and I replace the igniter rod all very simply.

i purchased this smoker from bbq guys dec 2020. my first cook was 8 slabs spare ribs and they turned out excellent . Unfortunately i lost it when my home burned april 2022 . Once i got my insurance settlement i will be purchasing this same camp chef model again. had over 50 cooks and all were flawless . if your a senior citizen like me and mobility is a question then this is the smoker for you . It will make a pro out of any grandpa. i cooked ribs , butts, brisket, pork loins, beer can chickens, thighs legs, quarters , all to perfection . only drawback is just not be scared to get a little grease on top of your head when cleaning. i also have 2 weber kettles and a 22in weber smokey mountain cooker all purchased from bbq guys. You cant go wrong when you purchase from these guys!!!
I needed an extra smoker to cook at a competition coming up in April. I was just going to use this for the pork butts for the Peoples Choice. Kinda a set it and forget it. When I unboxed it there was already a dent in the bottom near the Camp Chef name. I continued to unbox and the bracket for the thermometer was bent. Looking at the hopper connection, one of the ears of the fire pot was also bent. After installation of the legs I noticed the top wasn't sealed and to boot the bolts to attach the brackets for the racks were so hard to screw on I rang off the allen wrench head. No, I don't want a replacement. I fixed every issue but maybe in the future when these smokers are being assembled and prepped for shipment you can be more vigilant with those steps.
Camp Chef really knocked this one out of the park. A good strong construction and the manuel to assemble was very easy to read. This will hold alot of food. I haven't been a fan of P.I.D. controllers until now. P.I.D. controllers are normally so efficient at holding correct temps that they put out very little smoke. Camp chef thought of that and incorporared a smoke level setting that you can adjust according to how much smoke you want. Higher the smoke setting the more radical your temps swings will be. Great smoke output, the temperature swings are very minimal compared to other pellet smokers I have used. Using the smoker for the past few months I have pretty much only used the low smoke and high smoke settings. The low smoke is perfect for jerky staying at Temps between 180 and 150 depending on the weather and how much the vent on the side is open. I find having the vent closed as far as it will go keeps the low smoke at a steady pace. The high smoke has made really good pork loin and pork butts. I even used the smoker to reverse sear some steaks smoking them in the smoker and searing on the grill. The ash cleanout is a big plus as you dont have to vacuum it out after every cook just pull the lever on the side and the ashes fall out. I am very pleased with this smoker and I like it so much I am considering selling my pellet grill and getting my hands on one of those woodwind pellet grills. The trays are of good construction and are easy to clean. The Camp Chef app is awesome as I can go into town and do whatever I need to and the app still shows what temp your smoker or temp probes are at. Overall I am very pleased with the XXL and I believe if you are looking for a vertical the XXL should be your top pick.

This smoker was so easy to use. No bending over to fill the wood chunks and having to keep a watch over it. We like the ability to set temp and smoke level 1-10. The app on your phone makes it so easy to adjust temp and smoke level. Great Smoker! We'll be using for years to come, very happy with our purchase. 5 Stars!!!
Questions & Answers
Smoke does not really leak through the door - its pretty sealed.
Asked by JC | Answered by david.kastinHello JC The smoker just emits that high amount of smoke through the doors on the initial start up pre-heat. Once the smoker is running, it doesnt emit that much smoke even on high smoke 10. The cooking chamber is about as thick as a typical home grill or smoker. You really will be happy with this smoker for any home set up, all my friends love the smoker when they are over. If your looking for a smoke house type professional smoker, then this is not for you. Hope this helps.
Asked by JC | Answered by porod82Hi JC. Don't worry, this unit does not normally leak smoke. The body of the smoker is 20 gauge steel.
Asked by JC | Answered by Joey, BBQGuys ExpertHi Rick. Camp Chef products are manufactured in China.
Asked by Rick | Answered by Joey, BBQGuys ExpertHi TJ. A rule of thumb we use is that typically pellets will last about 1 lb per hr at low and slow temps.
Asked by TJ | Answered by Joey, BBQGuys ExpertHi Les. Generally 1 lb of pellets burns in about an hour at low and slow temperatures. So you shouldn't need to refill the hopper.
Asked by Les | Answered by Joey, BBQGuys ExpertHi Dan, this is powered with electricity but you should use wood pellets for the fuel. There are no connections for propane with this smoker.
Asked by dan | Answered by Hunter, BBQGuys ExpertHi Derek. This smoker can hold up to 18 pounds of pellets.
Asked by Derek | Answered by Joey, BBQGuys ExpertHi Joseph! You would have to check with your apartment complex and local building codes. Usually, you are not allowed to use grills or smokers on apartment balconies. Also, we do not have local pick up but can ship to you with most items shipping free.
Asked by Joseph | Answered by Tiffany, BBQGuys ExpertHello. The cooking grids are 21 1/2 x 14 inches, so anything that fits inside those dimensions would fit.
Asked by kapt krazy | Answered by JoeyHi Matt, heat is distributed evenly in the chamber, and the steel body holds in heat well.
Asked by Matt | Answered by JoeyHi Mike. Yes pellets will feed into the burn pot to maintain temperature as needed. Pellet grills are self igniting. They must be plugged into an electrical outlet.

When will my item arrive?
Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.
- Most freight products ship on a pallet
- Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
- We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.
For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:
Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.
For carriers that deliver without an appointment:
Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
