Love the grill - holds temps well. My only complaint is if you use super smoke ( which I planned on doing frequently) it puts soot all over your food and covers the inside of the grill / not good
Traeger Timberline 850 I have never used a smoker before. I am a 100% rookie. I ordered my first smoker a couple of weeks ago. After a lot of research I chose the Traeger Timberline 850. It arrived about a week later and sat in my garage for another week until I could find the time to assemble it. The following documents my experience as a first time user of this machine. 1.Packing Traeger has a video on its website that demonstrates how the machine is unpacked and assembled. I watched it twice to make sure I was familiar with the procedure. The packing was exceptional. The individual pieces were well protected from damage and the outer box folded out like a flower to provide a thick cardboard surface on which to do the assembly. 2.Material I was amazed at the quality of material that goes into the manufacture of the Traeger 850. I am not a metallurgist but I believe most of the parts are made out of steel. All of the external parts are very sturdy and very heavy. We are so used to seeing things manufactured with stamped aluminum these days. Not the case with the Traeger. The three grills are extremely well made they are extremely heavy and they are easily installed into the fire box. The braided steel gasket that mates the fire box to the lid is very impressive and it prevents smoke from exiting along the perimeter of the lid. 3.Assembly The assembly itself was straight forward even though the instructions were sparse and depended on some simplistic drawings to transfer the information I needed to put this thing together. The directions did say that assembly would require two people. Assembly requires that the fire box be laid on its side on the floor so the legs and wheels can be attached and then the fire box with legs has to be stood up for the remainder of the effort. The machine is so heavy that it's almost impossible for one man to right the partially completed assembly after the legs are attached. My wife and I were able to do it but I think we both strained a lot of muscles in the process. The instructions for doing the burn in did not exactly match what was shown on the control panel causing us to stop rethink and check menu options before continuing. We had at least 3 issues in this regard. 4.Use Being a first time user I relied heavily on the directions supplied by Traeger. We used a Tri Tip for our first attempt at smoking. We used the Traeger Steak Rub to season the meat and let it set for about three hours. We followed the recipe directions to set the cooking temperature and the probe temperature. We slow cooked the meat at 265 degrees for about 2 hours spritzing with beef broth every half hour until the probe temperature read 140 degrees. We then upped the temperature to 500 degrees and seared the meat 5 minutes per side. We removed the meat let it rest for 10 minutes and then sliced it for dinner. The meat was delicious but I think the rub added a sweet taste that I did not prefer. Next time I will stick with a mixture of sea salt and crushed pepper corns. I spritzed the meat every hour with beef broth. I found the wireless app to be very helpful. I liked the simplicity of the display and I liked how I could set and monitor cooking temperature probe temperature and timer settings remotely. I was able to monitor and control the Traeger via my iPhone while I was wandering around the house doing other things. It even sent me alarms to me when the probe temperature reached the preset 140 degrees. My guess is it will send timer alarms as well. Our second use of the Traeger had us smoking a 2 inch thick T-Bone. This time we used a sea salt and crushed pepper corn rub. The Traeger recipe suggested that the internal temperature of 140 would result in a medium rare steak. We set the probe temperature to 140 and the smoker temperature to 325. The steak turned out great. Tender tasty and definitely medium rare. Our little Chihuahua really liked it as well. 5.Conclusion We are very happy with the Traeger so far. As we gain more experience I think we will get much better results. For example instead of spritzing the meat with beef broth we are going to try spritzing with an Au Jus mixture instead. The one issue I have with this machine is that I cannot use the Super Smoke feature unless the cooking temperature is below something like 250 degrees. I don't know the reason for this. Once I do know I probably will understand and this issue will go away for me.
I've owned the Timberline 850 for about a year and a half and it turns out that it is just fantastic. I've grilled all my life (mostly gas grills) and was proud of the food I could put out. My son convinced me to get the new Traeger 850. I was holding my breathe that this was not a waste of money. It took a bit to get use to it but now....It's awesome!!! It hold temp /- 10 degrees perfectly. I cooked in 10 degree weather (once) with some wind and it keep the temp just fine. The double insulated construction and gaskets make a big difference. No hot spots to speak of and everything is smoked perfectly. The wi-fi is awesome for keeping track of things. Cleaning is easy the racks are super heavy the grease system works and the food is so different than the gas grill. Different in a good way. Do yourself a favor and go for it.. You will be glad you did
I can't be more pleased with my Traeger Timberline! This thing is so easy to use it's almost foolproof. I was a bit skeptical about the WiFire technology and app thinking I wouldn't use it very often but now I can't imagine owning a smoker without it. So convenient especially the probe alarm that beeps on my iPhone and Apple Watch when my meat has reached its temperature. I'm hooked and family and friends are the major beneficiaries. Even those who own a Traeger are anxious to upgrade after experiencing the Timberline. Pricey but worth every penny...I can't get enough of this thing!
We purchased yhe timberline 850. We decided it was time just smoke our own pork. This grill is awesome tempa are steady and i love the fact i can watch it with the wifi. Customers enjoy the meat and often brag about it.
Got the Timberline 850 as a Fathers Day gift. It is a wonderful grill and has exceeded my expectations. 30 year user of high end Weber gas grills and Weber kettle grills. This is my first Traeger pellet smoker/grill. My only regret is that I didn't make the switch earlier. I love the durable construction of the Timberline especially the double wall barrel and lid gasket. The WIFIRE remote control makes controlling and monitoring the unit very easy. The Traeger App is also great for getting recipes. Everything I've cooked so far has come out wonderful. To date this has included Rib-eye steaks brisket pork belly pork shoulder and Alaskan King Crab. Looking forward to future cooks on this versatile grill.
As someone who has been smoking on a large water smoker for 20-years and grilling on various charcoal grills for a lot longer I am really impressed with everything about this grill except the remote smart phone app. The grill gets to temperature relatively fast and holds it very well. With its double walls and lid casket it holds temperature extremely well which leads me to believe that it will perform well during the winter even at 5500 ft the altitude we live at. With it's unique exhaust and interior convection design it does a superior job of circulating the smoke and maintaining a uniform heat throughout the grill's interior. The meat probe port allows me to monitor meat temperatures with the included Traeger probe and auxiliary probes without opening the grill and loosing heat and smoke and without damaging the probe wires. My only minor concern with the grill itself is the front shelf which is too narrow. I like the electronic controls but not the Wi-Fi connection to the smart phone app. It's a non-starter that the Wi-Fi connection requires me to change my router password to ten or fewer characters and cannot handle a router with more than 2.4 ghz of power. I'm not about to power down my router and thereby reduce the performance of my other devices so I will wait for your software and app updates to fix this. When you get this taken care of my review goes to 5-stars.
We've had the Timberline 850 for a little over a month now. Wonderful smoker!! Very heavy duty! Built very well. We've smoked ribs twice boston butt once brisket and roasted chicken at 450 degrees all turned out absolutely wonderful. Easy to assemble easy to use ours keeps temp within 5 degrees at all times. I've had several smokers before I purchased this one which is my first Traeger. There is no comparison. Love our new Traeger!!
I have owned 5 Traegers' and am moving into a new house and will be celebrating with a new Traeger. I want to get the Timberline 850 but can't justify until a new bigger front shelf is available like my Texan. Please pretty please by April. Otherwise I will be forced to the lower model down.
We were late adopters----listening at length to our friends regale us with the way their new smokers performed. We purchased the Timberline 850 because it appeared to be the best constructed smoker on the market. The double walls will enable us to smoke year round. And the wifi controls promised to take the tedium out of smoking. The grill fully lived up to our expectations. The stainless steel inner walls the shelves and the wifi make this smoker a pleasure to own. It is heavy. We used the winch in our garage to lift it up and attach the legs. It does a great job on ribs and standing rib roast. Last night we smoked a big (4 lb) salmon filet---smoking it at 165 degrees for 30 minutes then at 225 until the temperature probe said that the interior was 145 degrees. I pride myself on grilled salmon but this smoked salmon was a cut above. If you have put off buying a smoker the Timberliine 850 justifies the plunge. Buy this one. I can't imagine a smoker getting any better.

When will my item arrive?
Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.
- Most freight products ship on a pallet
- Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
- We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.
For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:
Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.
For carriers that deliver without an appointment:
Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
