Grill works very well and does an excellent job smoking meat as well as performing as a charcol grill. Some quality issue - thermometer is pretty poor so I replaced it. The digital control stopped showing the temp and I had to turn it off and back on which appeared to fix it.
Would have given five 5 stars but I have completed two successful cooks (out of several more attempts) with this thing. The main selling point was that you could use an app and not have to babysit your grill during a cook. The app does not alert you, at all. So when my machine inexplicably shut off (plenty of fuel, no alert) I happened upon it because I looked outback. Sure enough, when I open the app it says "your device is off" but it doesn't say why and the app (even though notifications are turned on) does not alert me. As for the grill itself, I have tried several times to get a cook going, and the machine either powers down without explanation, or just stays in the 80-100 degree range for an hour and never gets to temperature. I am more than happy to amend this review after the issue is taken care of, but I have only had this thing for barely 6 months and got two solid cooks out of it. Customer Service's response has been underwhelming at best. They sent me free charcoal, which I can't use because the grill does not work. I had such high hopes for this grill. I will write a brand new review and recommend the snot out of it if my issues are taken care of. As I said, when it worked, it was great. The food turned out amazing with great smoke flavor. The convenience of a pellet grill but with way more flavor.
I love this grill - easy to use and great flavor! I have had minor issues with build quality and the app, but I would buy it again!
If you want the ease of a pellet grill but with better smoke flavor profile, this is what you're lookin for! The Masterbuilt 1050 Gravity Series provides a great range of temps for grilling and searing as well as for allowing longer low and slow BBQ. Whichever/whatever cooking scenario you're looking to do at any given time, the Masterbuilt 1050 is able to handle it. The 1050 also allows a generous amount of cooking space - 5 full packer briskets (avg 15lbs trimmed) can be cooked at once...Pro-tip: just be mindful to remove the included drip pan and use a large bucket underneath or the drip pan will overflow and spill onto the lower shelf and deck/flooring of your property. Cooking with charcoal provides that great smoky profile which can be further enhanced by throwing in chunks of your favorite hardwoods to create the smoke profile you desire. However, with that said, there are a few flaws that maybe the next iteration of the cookers will address: 1. Build quality -- stamped steel parts; 2. Firebox (part of build quality) - expect the included metal walls to burn out and the 'fire brick' to be replaced; this will be O&M cost to you the owner; 3. WiFi connection / MB App: not sure if it's the hardware connection or if it's the app; it just doesn't work well -- also the app will disconnect (please program the app to be able to run in the background for Android) if you don't have it running in the foreground, assuming that it even connects in the first place Despite the build quality and the app/software/WiFi connectivity issues, this is still a very good versatile cooker. I just purchased the official Masterbuilt rotisserie and will be trying that out in the future soon. (Won't post a review since I haven't tried using it yet.) If you're willing to overlook these flaws, it is a very solid and versatile BBQ unit. If I could ONLY have one grill or one smoker, I'd go with this because then I'd have both a good grill and a good smoker!
I won this grill in a contest, and refer to around my home as my "major award." I think my wife is jealous. But seriously I do spend a lot of time talking up this grill to my family, friends and people online who are considering buying a grill or smoker. Why? Masterbuilt didn't give me this grill, some company who sponsored the contest did. So why does it matter if I convince even one person to buy one of these? I guess its because of this: I think this grill is VERY inventive. It balances a lot of engineering and marketability goals very well, and is still within a price range which is actually doable for a lot of people. For years people have said they love the taste of food cooked with charcoal and with the option of adding any variety of wood chunks you want - that's this grill. Nobody seriously says they love the taste of food cooked with wood pellets, buyers of those grills took that sacrifice only because they wanted an easy to use "smart" grill. But now, we have this charcoal and wood fueled smart grill with a temp sensor, digital controls and a WiFi and bluetooth enabled app. That app also has a library of recipes with color photos. It also does something amazing that no others do: it heats up to a whopping 700 degrees, making it possible to cook the best steaks I've made in my life; slowly cooked first to temp, then taken off, then seared on each side for a minute. This grill also maintains a steady temperature in very cold or windy weather, which in Kansas was something I had a lot of difficulty doing with the entry-level "stick burner" I had before. It is double-wall constructed, you can touch it and it doesn't feel hot, even at the charcoal hopper. Sure, the metal and construction doesn't feel as thick or solid as grills priced 3-4 times as much: it's arguably "fra-gil-e" (that's Italian). But this isn't supposed to be that kind of grill. This is one impressively designed to use the cooking fuel people actually wanted for their smart grill but still stay within a price range that more people can afford. I absolutely love my major award, I use it more than any other grill I've had before. If I could figure out a way to display it in my front window, I might.
Bought it last year, best purchase I ever made. Always wanted a charcoal grill you can control the temp.
The grill is excelent but the app has come issues. On a 20 hr brisket the app shut the grill 3 times, fortunately after the first time i monitored it closely so no harm was done. The grill is superb, however the app is not ready for prime time just yet.
The assembly was tough, and the amount of fuel consumed by this grill seems to be high. Cooking low and slow can not be beat.
I bought this in September and love the fact that it gets to 700 degrees makes a great pizza. It holds temp well and gives good charcoal flavor. Wish it was a little bit more robustly built If it was it would be a home run.

When will my item arrive?
Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.
- Most freight products ship on a pallet
- Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
- We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.
For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:
Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.
For carriers that deliver without an appointment:
Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
