Great grill!

The grill is great! Pretty easy to assemble, with the exception of the cover for the hopper. It is really intuitive to use, the app connectivity is great, easy to setup. I would like It would be nice to see an alternative solution to the amount of styrofoam in the box. It's really expensive to dispose of. Otherwise very happy with it!

Almost great

I have a slightly older version of the Woodwind 24 from 2019. Smoker works great but i got the sear box on mine and within a year it completely rusted. It has never been uncovered or gotten wet and somehow every piece within the sear box rusted away. I was able to keep using it another 1-2 years but it got to where the entire thing has rusted away and now I can't even use it. I kept really good care of it hence why the smoker still works great but just not sure what happened to the sear box. Never got offered a replacement either.

So disappointed.

I've never had a more unreliable purchase. The temp probe goes out. Then the auger motor. It fails to maintain temperature still during cooks. I was so excited to ge this smoker when I could finally afford something like this. I can't trust it to smoke anything. At any moment I might have to emergently convert to cooking in the oven inside. Its sad that something so expensive can be such a let down. It just sits covered up in my driveway now until I can figure out what to do with it.

Awesome company

I've had this grill for about 4 years. The only thing I like better than the grill is the company and customer service they provide customers.

ALL I HOPED IT WOULD BE!

I have been using pellet smokers for over ten years and this is my first Camp Chef and I am more than pleased. Temp control and feed consistency are as good as it gets at all ranges. Features such as the firebox cleanout and the direct heat slide are outstanding. The WIFI has worked flawlessly and is really convenient. One caution - the smoker is a bit tricky to assemble. All the parts fit but the instructions are not as clear as they could be and require a bit of basic mechanical know-how. I have done multiple cooks so far and the real test for me has been my St. Louis ribs, in which I take pride. Did a number of racks for the 4th and they have never been better. I am somewhat of a research nerd and after much study, I'm glad I picked Camp Chef.

The brand to choose if you want great smoked meals

After nearly a decade of honing my skills smoking all kinds of food using a basic smoker, I wanted move up to a device with all the "bells and whistles" such as a PID controller, Bluetooth, ash cleanout, etc. that my old smoker didn't have. I did my research and the Camp Chef Woodwind 24 constantly came to the top of my list for features, quality, price and customer service. The unit arrived in just 3 days on a pallet to ensure safe transit. Assembly was easy and took less than 2 hrs to finish the job. But the real test was the first cook that weekend. I decided on brisket accompanied by corn on the cob. The meat was brined and then dry rubbed and the corn had been soaking so all was set to go. I filled the hopper, plugged it in, set the temp and waited for the magic to happen. Believe me when I say I was not disappointed! The PID controller coupled the the Camp Chef app kept the temperature steady at 250' +/- 5' with the smoke set to 4 The temperature probes let me know the progress of the meat and the timers built into the app reminded me when it was time to spritz the brisket. By the way, the app is a great tool especially when you have other things to take care of like guests. But the real proof was when I served the brisket and corn to our friends that evening. The bark was crisp and tasty and the meat was cooked to perfection. Tender, juicy and with a smokey taste that put a smile on everyone's face. The corn was perfect and the smoke flavor made if an excellent side-dish. Since then, I've make ribs, chicken, salmon, smoked eggplant, asparagus, and even pizza with every meal being a success. I've only had the Woodwind 24 for less than 1 month and it has proven itself to be a reliable and easy to use tool for anyone who wants to enjoy those great meals that only a pellet smoker can offer.

My new best friend!

Brand New Grill Did Not Work

Ordered the Woodwind WIFI 24 for our weekend lake house. I put it together 3 weekends ago and went up the next weekend to break it in getting ready for the Memorial Holiday weekend where I was going to cook for the entire family. Filled up the hopper with pellets and started the feed step to fill the tube and burn off the grill. The auger was not turning so I removed all of the pellets and attempted to call customer service on Saturday for troubleshooting tips. They are closed on Saturdays so I had to call the next Monday for assistance. I spoke to someone who was very friendly and helpful, but I was at my permanent home and not our lake home where the grill is located. They decided to send me a common part (auger pin) that breaks so that I could take the grill apart the next weekend when I was there. The part did not come in until after the weekend, but I did take the grill apart and determined the auger pin was fine, but the auger motor was not working. I called yesterday and requested a call back, but I have not heard back from anyone as of today to get a replacement motor sent. Just really disappointed that my brand new grill did not work and that I missed an opportunity to cook for the family on the Holiday weekend. Hopefully I will hear back soon from someone so I can get the grill up and running or replaced.

WONT BUY AGAIN

3 years in and some pretty significant rust, I always keep it covered. The wifi controller is useless, won't connect more often than not. I did get a replacement controller but the battle with support wasn't worth the hassle since the second one only connected reliably for one summer. Temp probs don't last and they are relatively expensive (when in stock) On a positive note, it does smoke well! don't rely on the app and I don't see this lasting much longer....

Rusting everywhere after 1 year

Initially, I very happy with this grill. I even went all-in on the Sidekick system with the pizza oven and skillet after being pleased with the performance. However, I'm about one year into my ownership, and the paint is peeling off everywhere on the inside and outside, which means that the entire thing is getting covered in rust. I do store the grill outside year round. But, I keep it covered with the Camp Chef cover whenever it's not in use, so it's completely unacceptable have this happen in less than 12 months. Very disappointed. I was singing Camp Chef's praises last summer. But, now I'm feeling pretty let down.

Great ideas poorly rendered

Been using this grill for the last 2 years. Great ideas were thrown when they drawn the smoker. But unfortunately, poor qual1ity materials were used for the construction. Deflectors & slider (slide & sear) are too thins, and warp up to a point that they are useless. Bottom half paint chipped at the second or 3rd use, rust everywhere at the 5th use, and the smoker is not even outside subject to elelments. And the App is basically worthless, keep disconnecting / forgetting pairing with smoker during cooks.... VERY disapointed

Expert Review

The Skinny:
  • Outstanding 1,236 square inches of total cooking space
  • Slide and Grill functionality effortlessly offers indirect cooking
  • Smart Smoke technology delivers excellent smoke infusion
  • Respectable 22-pound pellet hopper with quick release function
  • Control from your phone with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity

“Great-tasting food will always bring people together.” That’s the mantra behind Camp Chef, an industry mainstay from 1990 that builds some of the camp-friendliest outdoor cookware we’ve seen. That brings us to the Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi 36-inch pellet grill — if you want the ease of pellet grill smoking and the satisfaction of toggling indirect cooking on and off with a convenient knob, you’re in the right place. If you don’t, try it for yourself.

This is a great pellet grill built with respectable results, above-average construction, and a few tucked-away bells and whistles to get you, well, whistling. Everything we asked of the Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi, it did well. We loaded it chock-full of meat; it gave us great smoke and better bark. We set high expectations for temperature evenness; it met them. Even ash disposal turned out effortless by comparison. (Have we got your attention yet?) If you’re intrigued so far, good news! It gets even better.

Performance:

From preheats to smoked meats, Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi proves a solid contender for your pellet grill of choice.

First up? Thermocouple tests. Setting the pellet grill to the “smoke” function (160°F, give or take), we left the grill alone for an hour. The thermocouples indicated an average overall grill temperature of 192°F, with a low level of deviancy — the outlier was our probe in the top-left quadrant at approximately 30 degrees higher. That’s a better batting average than many indoor ovens out there today. (With that said, we don’t want to see any of those pumping out smoke.)

Next, we ran our preheat and evenness tests on high, which pauses at about 500°F. After 15 minutes with Camp Chef’s Slide and Grill heat deflector covering the firepot, the Camp Chef Woodwind’s average cooking grid temperature sat at 320°F. (Does that sound low? Maybe. But with the Slide and Grill plate pulled away from the firepot, 15 minutes will give you plenty enough heat for great searing.) For the high-heat evenness test, we ran the pellet grill for 30 minutes; the average cooking grid temperature was about 439°F. Our pal in the top-left quadrant was once again the furthest off, at 100 degrees above the average.

And now, for the number science you can eat! Chef Tony covered the pellet grill surface with 28 4-inch patties; we saw consistent, even results, barring a few in the leftmost quarter of the cooking grates. Afterward, uncovered the firepot with that heat deflector to sear those beautiful steaks we all love so much. He had this to say: “Searing can definitely be a challenge with some pellet grills, but with Camp Chef’s Woodwind? This was not the case. I was very impressed with the all-over, steakhouse-like crust I was able to put on my steaks.” When asked more, he added: “The direct flame provides enough heat to get a nice crust before the inside is over-done. Whereas a pellet grill without the option of the direct flame does make it a little bit hard to sear a steak without just kind of you know, baking it through.”

“Great,” you ask, “but what about low and slow?” Don’t worry — we weren’t going to forgo the tried-and-true test of any pellet grill. For this final real-world test, we buried the Woodwind grates in a few solid pork shoulders, a smattering of baby back ribs, an entire chicken, a few handfuls of sausages, and whatever vegetables we could fit around them. (Not many.) The result? Chef Tony packed nearly 20 folks full of perfectly smoked grub. What more could we ask for?

Quality:

Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi pellet grill is built solidly with reasonable components for this class.

Great performance isn’t our only measuring stick for a great pellet grill, so let’s discuss Chef Tony’s favorite topic: XRF scanners and digital calipers. The pellet grill lid clocked in at 14-gauge, 304-grade stainless steel; the enameled steel rods of the cooking grids measured nearly 5 millimeters thick. (The extra top grates are coated in nickel instead, but still about 5 millimeters thick.) We determined 17-gauge powder-coated steel for the firebox. Meanwhile, the firepot itself registered 304-grade stainless steel construction, and its Slide and Grill heat deflector is 16-gauge steel. Above that, the drip tray diffuser pan is built from 13-gauge steel.

That’s right: we pivoted straight back into the number science! So, what’s that mean for you? The Camp Chef Woodwind pellet grill is not only an above-average construction for this class of grill, but it’s respectably well-built. Then again, it’s consistent with what we’ve seen from Camp Chef in the past. If you’re already a fan of the brand, the Woodwind Wi-Fi will only make you a bigger believer; if you’re interested in taking it for a spin, this is certainly solid quality for the price point.

Features:

The Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi pellet grill doesn’t skimp on functionality, but the rockstar feature is its painlessly simple indirect cooking.

Camp Chef Woodwind’s Smart Smoke feature is a great place to start. For that mountain of smoked grub, Chef Tony ran the smoke setting at 10. “It makes a very noticeable difference.” (Check our video above to see what it did for the barbecue’s bark!) And this pellet grill doesn’t stop there: it packs plenty of pellets with that 22-pound hopper, and that’s a generous size for longer low-and-slow smoke sessions. There’s a knob for a quick and dirty pellet purge — whether you’re stowing the grill or swapping out pellet flavors, it’s a great touch. Beneath the lid, the main cooking surface is boosted by a pair of bonus removable cooking grids. Boy, do we love those top racks: fill out an entire second cooking surface, stagger them, or space them for whatever you have in mind. Combined, that’s a whopping 1,236 square inches of grilling and smoking space.

With “Wi-Fi” in the name, we expect a certain standard of convenience. Camp Chef didn’t disappoint here: the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled PID controller does what you’d expect, allowing smartphone integration to the grill’s interface. Some grills let you see the readings, and that’s it. Here? Not so. Manage the pellet grill’s temperature, adjust the smoke levels, and even monitor (and label!) any of the 4 meat probes to watch your session’s progress. Not attracted to that feature? Don’t worry about it: keep your smoking style old school, and simply use the PID controller’s physical knob instead.

But our top features had to be the Slide and Grill diffuser baffle and the ash disposal. We’ve already mentioned the former a few times, but Chef Tony considers that his killer attraction for this pellet grill. Here’s why: with a simple push-pull knob, you can swap between direct and indirect grilling without needing to open the lid. (Let alone remove any components. How awesome is that?) When it’s time to finally extract the ashes, the typical pellet grill requires pulling cooking grids, heat diffusers, and so on. This time? Nope! Another handy knob conveniently dumps your ashes into a metal cup below the firepot. It doesn’t really get any easier. If it did, it’d mean Camp Chef themselves would have to send a guy to your pellet grill for ash removal.

Question:
Can the accessories like the sear box or sidekick burner be added after original purpose? Or must they be ordered at the time of sale? Was This Helpful?
Answers:

Hi Cris. They can be added at the time of purchase or separately after you already have your grill.

Asked by Cris | Answered by Joey, BBQGuys Expert
Question:
What's the difference between the side kick and sear box? And which one would be recommended for cooking burgers/steaks?Was This Helpful?
Answers:

Hi Dave. The Sidekick is an attachment which works with other accessories to add more customization to the way you grill. You can purchase separate attachments for the Sidekick such as a pizza oven, and the BBQ Grill Box (which functions similarly to the Sear Box) and it also works as a regular power burner for boiling, etc. If you are just interested in high heat cooking and searing, such as for burgers and steaks, the Sear Box will work perfectly.

Question:
I'm trying to figure out the difference between the sear box and the side kick. Best I can tell, the sear box comes with a grill and the sidekick comes with a griddle. Is there a grill and heat diffuser accessory that can be purchased for the sidekick? Is the pizza oven a sidekick accessory? thanks, BobWas This Helpful?
Answers:

Hi Bob! The Sear Box has a 16,000 BTU burner that can reach temperatures up to 900 degrees. The 11.5 by 16 inch grill grate is perfect for searing leaving perfect grill marks. If versatility is what you are looking for then I would go with the Sidekick. The 14 x 16.5 inch Sidekick has a 28,000 BTU burner and comes with a griddle top. Other accessories are sold separately such as a pizza oven or grill box. Hope this helps!

Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.

  • Most freight products ship on a pallet
  • Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
  • We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.

For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:

Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.

For carriers that deliver without an appointment:

Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
