The first Pawleys Island hammock was handcrafted from cotton-rope by a South Carolina riverboat captain, Joshua John Ward, in 1889. Since the days of Cap’n Josh, Pawleys Island has continued to improve their core materials and expand their line of products. Today, they offer rope hammocks in all-weather, cotton-soft DuraCord and soft-spun polyester, as well as elaborately designed fabric hammocks, poly lumber furniture, and other accessories.
