Good griddle.

Cooks well. Pre season works ok. Gets hotter than expected for griddle if it's size. Over all no complaints.

Alright but not great

For the money, I would expect a lot more. Bottom line is the features are good, but I don't like to massive differences in temperature across the grilling surface. Also the Bluetooth/WiFi worked at first but hasn't worked after about two weeks. It seems like the answer is common and I just need to replace the controller, but honestly just haven't had time,.....and also I wouldn't expect the controller to need replacing after two weeks on a grill I spent SO much money on.

Fantastic Pellet Grill

I purchased this grill a bit over a month ago. Had some issues with the delivery but that is is FexEx's fault, not Camp Chef. I have used it several times to smoke, steaks, ribs and made some beef and venison jerky. All of it was fantastic. I have a gas upright smoker but this puts it to shame, the smoke flavor is much better and the temperature control is fantastic. Very easy to change the flavor of pellets used. I could not be happier. This is a review of the grill which is great. However I must also say that the app for it can be described in two words..... It SUCKS. I am a Android guy, and the app only works on an older tablet that has an older Android software version. I have two newer phones and it does not work at all on them. So that is bummer and would like to have it working at some point. Also I have upgraded the Firmware on the grill to the most recent one and the App still does not work. But as stated, this is review of the Woodwind 36 and it is a great product. I also purchase the Side Kick, it came with the griddle and I have used it a couple of times. I am also please with it. I also purchased the Sear box (the one with the hinged lid). Just like the rest of the grill it is fantastic. Use it for reverse searing steak and you will never go back to just grilling steak!!! My advice, is buy this pellet grill for what it is. Great smoke flavor with lots of control over how much smoke you want and great temperature control. Just don't expect much from the app and it's functions until they hire some computer guys to get the kinks worked out of it.

Awesome quality

I've had mine for a couple months now and still love it. The quality compared to other brands is hands-down superior. The sidekick is awesome. I make eggs every day on the skillet, and have even made pancakes. The direct/indirect flame option works great. I've smoked 6 racks of ribs at one time, and had plenty of space is there was more I needed to add to the grill. The ash clean out is the piece that puts it above smokers like the traeger. Cleaning out the ash so you can keep cooking without disassembling the entire barrel takes about 5 seconds. Definitely worth the money!

Woodwind 36 wifi

the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is the wifi connection between the smoker and app on ny phone isn't the best... it'll work great one cook then the next cook i'll have to reset everything then it'll work for a couple smokes. The wifi connection does work but could be better. Now onto the smoker... it is awesome!!! Very narrow temperature swings even at high smoke settings and it is extremely user friendly.

Poorly written 1st time start up guide.

Putting this together wasn't hard, though it required 2 people at some points in the process. However, it is unacceptable for a product at this price point to have poor 1st time start up documentation. I should not have to pray to the "Grill God" for clarity! I expect a guide titled some variant of: 1st Time Use Manual. This manual has step by step instructions and appropriate diagrams. Look at automotive repair manuals for an example of what I expected. Camp Chef, you give us one large wall of text mysteriously titled "Filling the Auger Tube" as the beginning of the start up guide. It comes right after info about cleaning out the grill. Hot tip: you have to start the grill up before you need to clean it. Cleaning info does not fit and should be moved later in the manual. Here is what Camp Chef SHOULD tell new customers, but doesn't: 1. Their first step in the manual is to feed the auger tube and select FEED from the main menu. This is wrong. You need to plug it in and turn it on. Where is that switch? The on switch is on the hopper, near the bottom left of the electronic interface. There is a drawing of the switch "Figure 20." This is not within the start up paragraph. It is after the App Quick start guide in my version of the Warning and Instruction book. 2. Once you turn the grill on, turn the silver knob to select startup. This is explained later in the guide and should be referenced right away, but it isn't. 3. There is a sentence in the info about feeding the auger which tells you to pull the burner clean-out knob on the right side of the grill. What they don't tell you is that you first need to lift the silver plate. The plate is a simple locking mechanism. 4. Breaking in the grill- you'll find this a page past where it should be. You've likely set your temp and smoke amount before you stumble upon on this gem. 5. Pellet Grill Guide book- this pretty tri-fold comes with the grill. It is a sales guide, not a use guide. By the time you find this, you may be so annoyed at the lack of proper use instructions that you'll be hesitant to make another purchase. 6. The manual states not to store or leave pellets in the hopper for too long as they'll attract moisture. None of the recipes you provide estimate a pellet volume used. I live in a humid environment. Some best practices here would be greatly appreciated. Camp Chef- you took an excited new customer and turned them into a customer who took the effort to write you a review. Having clear and accurate start up instructions is just as important as advertising spending! When people ask me how I like my new grill, I have more annoyances to talk about than positives.

Easy use

Love this grill it is easy to use food always tastes great. The WiFi doesn't always seem to connect I haven't figured how to keep a consistent connection, I have followed the directions. The top racks don't slide in the shelf brackets so I just set them on top for now its just not very secure. Overall I really like this grill so far.

Expert Review

The Skinny:
  • Outstanding 1,236 square inches of total cooking space
  • Slide and Grill functionality effortlessly offers indirect cooking
  • Smart Smoke technology delivers excellent smoke infusion
  • Respectable 22-pound pellet hopper with quick release function
  • Control from your phone with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity

“Great-tasting food will always bring people together.” That’s the mantra behind Camp Chef, an industry mainstay from 1990 that builds some of the camp-friendliest outdoor cookware we’ve seen. That brings us to the Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi 36-inch pellet grill — if you want the ease of pellet grill smoking and the satisfaction of toggling indirect cooking on and off with a convenient knob, you’re in the right place. If you don’t, try it for yourself.

This is a great pellet grill built with respectable results, above-average construction, and a few tucked-away bells and whistles to get you, well, whistling. Everything we asked of the Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi, it did well. We loaded it chock-full of meat; it gave us great smoke and better bark. We set high expectations for temperature evenness; it met them. Even ash disposal turned out effortless by comparison. (Have we got your attention yet?) If you’re intrigued so far, good news! It gets even better.

Performance:

From preheats to smoked meats, Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi proves a solid contender for your pellet grill of choice.

First up? Thermocouple tests. Setting the pellet grill to the “smoke” function (160°F, give or take), we left the grill alone for an hour. The thermocouples indicated an average overall grill temperature of 192°F, with a low level of deviancy — the outlier was our probe in the top-left quadrant at approximately 30 degrees higher. That’s a better batting average than many indoor ovens out there today. (With that said, we don’t want to see any of those pumping out smoke.)

Next, we ran our preheat and evenness tests on high, which pauses at about 500°F. After 15 minutes with Camp Chef’s Slide and Grill heat deflector covering the firepot, the Camp Chef Woodwind’s average cooking grid temperature sat at 320°F. (Does that sound low? Maybe. But with the Slide and Grill plate pulled away from the firepot, 15 minutes will give you plenty enough heat for great searing.) For the high-heat evenness test, we ran the pellet grill for 30 minutes; the average cooking grid temperature was about 439°F. Our pal in the top-left quadrant was once again the furthest off, at 100 degrees above the average.

And now, for the number science you can eat! Chef Tony covered the pellet grill surface with 28 4-inch patties; we saw consistent, even results, barring a few in the leftmost quarter of the cooking grates. Afterward, uncovered the firepot with that heat deflector to sear those beautiful steaks we all love so much. He had this to say: “Searing can definitely be a challenge with some pellet grills, but with Camp Chef’s Woodwind? This was not the case. I was very impressed with the all-over, steakhouse-like crust I was able to put on my steaks.” When asked more, he added: “The direct flame provides enough heat to get a nice crust before the inside is over-done. Whereas a pellet grill without the option of the direct flame does make it a little bit hard to sear a steak without just kind of you know, baking it through.”

“Great,” you ask, “but what about low and slow?” Don’t worry — we weren’t going to forgo the tried-and-true test of any pellet grill. For this final real-world test, we buried the Woodwind grates in a few solid pork shoulders, a smattering of baby back ribs, an entire chicken, a few handfuls of sausages, and whatever vegetables we could fit around them. (Not many.) The result? Chef Tony packed nearly 20 folks full of perfectly smoked grub. What more could we ask for?

Quality:

Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi pellet grill is built solidly with reasonable components for this class.

Great performance isn’t our only measuring stick for a great pellet grill, so let’s discuss Chef Tony’s favorite topic: XRF scanners and digital calipers. The pellet grill lid clocked in at 14-gauge, 304-grade stainless steel; the enameled steel rods of the cooking grids measured nearly 5 millimeters thick. (The extra top grates are coated in nickel instead, but still about 5 millimeters thick.) We determined 17-gauge powder-coated steel for the firebox. Meanwhile, the firepot itself registered 304-grade stainless steel construction, and its Slide and Grill heat deflector is 16-gauge steel. Above that, the drip tray diffuser pan is built from 13-gauge steel.

That’s right: we pivoted straight back into the number science! So, what’s that mean for you? The Camp Chef Woodwind pellet grill is not only an above-average construction for this class of grill, but it’s respectably well-built. Then again, it’s consistent with what we’ve seen from Camp Chef in the past. If you’re already a fan of the brand, the Woodwind Wi-Fi will only make you a bigger believer; if you’re interested in taking it for a spin, this is certainly solid quality for the price point.

Features:

The Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi pellet grill doesn’t skimp on functionality, but the rockstar feature is its painlessly simple indirect cooking.

Camp Chef Woodwind’s Smart Smoke feature is a great place to start. For that mountain of smoked grub, Chef Tony ran the smoke setting at 10. “It makes a very noticeable difference.” (Check our video above to see what it did for the barbecue’s bark!) And this pellet grill doesn’t stop there: it packs plenty of pellets with that 22-pound hopper, and that’s a generous size for longer low-and-slow smoke sessions. There’s a knob for a quick and dirty pellet purge — whether you’re stowing the grill or swapping out pellet flavors, it’s a great touch. Beneath the lid, the main cooking surface is boosted by a pair of bonus removable cooking grids. Boy, do we love those top racks: fill out an entire second cooking surface, stagger them, or space them for whatever you have in mind. Combined, that’s a whopping 1,236 square inches of grilling and smoking space.

With “Wi-Fi” in the name, we expect a certain standard of convenience. Camp Chef didn’t disappoint here: the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled PID controller does what you’d expect, allowing smartphone integration to the grill’s interface. Some grills let you see the readings, and that’s it. Here? Not so. Manage the pellet grill’s temperature, adjust the smoke levels, and even monitor (and label!) any of the 4 meat probes to watch your session’s progress. Not attracted to that feature? Don’t worry about it: keep your smoking style old school, and simply use the PID controller’s physical knob instead.

But our top features had to be the Slide and Grill diffuser baffle and the ash disposal. We’ve already mentioned the former a few times, but Chef Tony considers that his killer attraction for this pellet grill. Here’s why: with a simple push-pull knob, you can swap between direct and indirect grilling without needing to open the lid. (Let alone remove any components. How awesome is that?) When it’s time to finally extract the ashes, the typical pellet grill requires pulling cooking grids, heat diffusers, and so on. This time? Nope! Another handy knob conveniently dumps your ashes into a metal cup below the firepot. It doesn’t really get any easier. If it did, it’d mean Camp Chef themselves would have to send a guy to your pellet grill for ash removal.

When will my item arrive?

Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.

  • Most freight products ship on a pallet
  • Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
  • We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.

For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:

Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.

For carriers that deliver without an appointment:

Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
