Can a Kamado Grill Be Indestructible? Spoiler Alert: Yes

Simply put, the Blaze Kamado offers superior durability to ceramic kamados the traditional material for this grill type for a lifetime of grilling. How? Its all in the cast aluminum alloys that contain very little iron, which results in a rust-proof design strongly resistant to the elements. And unlike ceramic, cast aluminum allows you to use any type of charcoal, wood, or lighting materials without the worry of it causing damage or being absorbed into the grill body. Oh, theres more: you wont need to shell out extra money to replace the top exhaust cap, a commonly faulty component on ceramic kamados. Everything comes together to create the most durable kamado on the market.

Maximum Heat Retention for Maximum Flavor

Being virtually indestructible is one thing, but we know you care about cooking power most of all. The Blaze Kamado delivers with heavy-duty, 304-grade stainless steel cooking grates that measure 12mm in thickness to retain huge amounts of heat for an excellent sear. By shaping the grates hexagonally, Blaze gives food more surface contact with the cooking surface, in turn producing bolder sear marks for wonderfully caramelized flavor. And instead of using a felt gasket like the competition, this cast aluminum kamado utilizes a tongue-and-groove seal. The design eliminates the need to fix a damaged gasket another commonly replaced kamado component and also provides an exceptional seal that prevents precious heat and smoke from escaping mid-cook. More heat and more smoke in the grill mean tastier food on your plate.

Easier Grilling & Cleaning

That 20 diameter cooking grate we were going on about earlier? Well, its hinged on both sides so you can easily add wood or charcoal without removing food and lifting the entire grate. Blaze also included a mid-level, 18 cooking grate that allows you to cook closer to the fire for more intense heat (its also a good spot to place a drip pan or a heat deflector for indirect cooking).

The Blaze Kamados lid hinge is made from 304-grade stainless steel and features a convenient lift-assist function for easy opening and closing. At the bottom of the firebox, youll find a removable stainless steel ash pan with handles for hassle-free cleanup. A large temperature gauge with markings for smoking, roasting, and searing is mounted in the lid, letting you easily monitor cooking temperatures as you entertain. The grill also includes cast aluminum feet so you can safely stabilize it in your outdoor kitchen island, should you choose to use it off the cart. And as one final show of care, this kamado grill comes with high-heat cooking gloves are for safe handling.

EXTRA! Turn your kamado into a rotisserie with Blazes optional rotisserie kit.

Last grill you'll ever need to buy

I spent months researching kamado grills, even bought a small ceramic that was on sale for $200 before investing a ton of money in "The Real McCoy" to see that I would like a kamado at all over a gas or other charcoal grills I've used in the past. I finally bit the bullet and took the plunge. A few factors that made this my clear choice before buying it and falling deeper in love with it… #1 I was looking at the kamado joe 24" and the weight was just shy of 500lbs, I plan on moving in a couple years that's not something I want to lug around. The blaze is only about 170lbs. #2 in under a year my small ceramic was due to need new gaskets. The old ones had already worn out. The blaze doesn't use gaskets, it has a tongue and groove seals completely. #3 The blaze comes with a lifetime warranty, also in just under a year the fire bowl cracked on my ceramic grill. When I contacted the company they said that it didn't cover cracked Ceramic, they just informed me that it was probably from the grill cooling to quickly and I was responsible for the replacement. This leads to #4 the blaze doesn't use a fire bowl it just has three rows of grates, the lower for charcoal, the middle mainly for a heat deflector and the top one is self explanatory, this means wall to wall useable space. On my 15" ceramic only 13" was able to be used for a cook surface, you don't have to worry about your food hanging over the edge of the fire bowl and not getting even heat distribution or a mess running down the sides of the fire bowl. Lastly, cleaning the ash out is a breeze because the whole bottom is covered by a removable ash pan. I say last but that's just the last thing that was a deciding factor before I bought it. I've found many reasons it is a superior Cooker. Yes "cooker" because it's not just a grill or a smoker, it's extremely versatile, I use it for high heat searing, low and slow smoking, I got a pizza steel and it's a great pizza oven, and even do stuff in my dutch oven.

3 years on; not one problem; stunning performance

Just finished my 46th bag of lump (almost 500 pounds) burned and not a single issue. My previous 2 ceramic komados (BGEs) were a PITA by comparison. Blaze is a far better value; not to mention frustration free reliability. Ceramic is cheaper to get BUT expensive to keep AND temperamental to use. Blaze has transformed my BBQ reluctance into BBQ enthusiasm! Just buy it, you won't regret it.

I would buy this grill again without hesitation.

This is the best Kamado on the market in my opinion. It's never gonna break or fail you. The built in rotisserie option is excellent and never having to replace gasket is an added bonus.

Great Looking and Consistent Smoker

I've been using this smoker actively for over a year. There are less expensive options available, but none that compare with the great look of this kamado. I use it primarily for smoking and have great success with briskets, pork butts, chicken and ribs. Highly recommended.

Revised Review
Had mine for a year now...

Prior to the Blaze Kamado, I had a large Big Green Egg for 15 years. The people who bought our last house wanted it so I needed to replace it. I bought the Blaze and it is easily as good as the Egg if not better for slightly larger size, grate height options, and durability. I cook on this thing literally every night and it does everything the Egg can do and as well or better... slow cooks, fast cooks, etc. AND I never have to worry about replacing ceramic parts and putting new gaskets on ever again. Highly recommended!

Attractive and effective

Grill smoke or bake, works great. Good temperatures control for low and slow, baking or grilling. After a 12 hour smoke at 225 deg F, still had half the original charcoal left.

Expert Review

Pros:

  • Aluminum construction is significantly lighter in weight than traditional ceramic kamado grills
  • The lift-assist hinges allow for very easy opening and closing
  • The grill is considerably more durable and resistant to rust than ceramic grills

Cons:

  • The full-width ash pan is a nice and effective feature, but you have to remove all three grates in order to lift it out for cleanup
  • Besides the rotisserie, it’s lacking in accessories that give you more cooking versatility
  • The grill is hotter to the touch than its ceramic counterparts, so take extra care when standing near or managing the grill

The Skinny:

  • Solid cast aluminum kamado grill is an industry first
  • Backed by Blaze’s best-in-class lifetime warranty
  • Boasts incredible cooking performance
  • Durable construction is virtually indestructible
  • Blends in with stainless steel outdoor kitchen appliances

By: BBQGuys Staff

This grill is the toughest kamado grill on the market. It’s backed by a best-in-class, lifetime warranty, and it looks and cooks great too. My main takeaways from using this grill are the durable aluminum construction, excellent heat retention, and the easy lift-assist hood that makes opening and closing the grill so easy.

Quality
A perfect blend of durability and affordability results in exceptional grilling quality

  • The Blaze Kamado’s aluminum construction offers superior durability to traditional ceramic kamados. The cast aluminum alloy results in a rust-proof design that can withstand the elements, making the grill practically indestructible. Another benefit is it allows you to use any fuel source—even regular charcoal briquettes and lighter fluid. Traditional ceramic kamados are porous, meaning they absorb moisture and odors. This helps them retain heat, but because they’re so porous, using lighter fluid or charcoal briquettes pre-soaked in lighter fluid ruins ceramic grills. I recommend steering clear of these anyway and using only natural lump charcoal, but the advantage of the Blaze Kamado being aluminum is that it won’t absorb the lighter fluid and ruin your grill.

  • Blaze Kamado in freestanding cart with tool hooks

The rust-resistant nature of aluminum means that you won’t need to replace the top exhaust cap, which is a commonly faulty component on ceramic kamados.

The silver-colored finish and 304 stainless accents also seamlessly blend in with other stainless steel equipment in your outdoor kitchen for a cohesive look.

Inside the grill, you'll find a 20-inch stainless steel hex grill grate made of 12 mm 304-grade stainless steel that provides a large surface area and excellent heat retention for those beautiful sear marks everyone wants.

Performance
This grill ranks among the best Kamados on the market

  • As far as cooking performance is concerned, this is among the best of them! Heat retention is one of the most important features of kamado grills, which are known for holding their temperature during long cooks, and the Blaze Kamado is no exception. I found the thick cast aluminum walls to hold heat just as well as the ceramic kamados. I also like the unique tongue-and-groove design that seals the grill lid tight to the base, allowing little to no heat escape. More heat and more smoke in the grill means tastier food on your plate. And unlike the felt gaskets on other kamado grills, this won’t need occasional replacing.

  • Grilling filet mignon and lobster tails for four on the Blaze Kamado grill

By shaping the grates hexagonally, Blaze gives food more contact with the cooking surface, which produces more pronounced sear marks. Along with the solid heat retention, the heat control is top-notch. The lower air intake features a multi-function door with a dial for precise control and the built-in, cast aluminum top air vent allows you to easily set the vent opening, which stays in place even when lifting the lid.

Features
Packed with innovative features, this grill offers unparalleled convenience and versatility

The stainless steel hex grill grates feature two hinged sections for easily adding charcoal or wood chunks. Underneath the main cooking grid is an 18-inch, 304 stainless steel, multi-purpose grate that gives you the flexibility to cook food on this and the top grate at the same time, which almost doubles your cooking space. You can also set a pan of liquid or a heat deflector on it when cooking with indirect heat.

  • Under this multi-purpose grate lies a 304 stainless steel charcoal grate. When it's time to clean out the ashes, I love the full-width, lift-out ash pan. That pan is more convenient and effective than scraping out the ashes on a regular ceramic kamado.

  • Blaze aluminum kamado grill cooking surface with sides lifted up to access coals

Finally, I love the 304 series stainless steel lift-assist hinge on the lid. It makes it so easy to open and close the lid, it practically feels like air, especially compared to other kamados which tend to be bulky and heavy.

Question:
How will the exterior appearance of the cast aluminum material hold up in a coastal salt air environment? Will it tend to oxidize faster/more extensively than in an inland environment? Was This Helpful?

Great question! This grill handles salt air like no other. Take a look at this video, where Blaze submerged the grill in salt water for several weeks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leg2X5G63H0

Question:
Does this grill have a place to use an electric lighter? I dont like using lighter fluid and can't tell if it has a door or room to using a plug in, horseshoe style electric charcoal lighter? Was This Helpful?
Answers:

Hi there! The bottom of the firebox has an opening for raking leftover ashes, but this is the only opening other than the top and likely wouldn't be able to fit a horeshoe style lighter through it. The ideal method for lighting the charcoal in this grill would be using a chimney starter, like this one: https://www.bbqguys.com/charcoal-companion/stainless-steel-charcoal-chimney-starter, or using a Looftlighter and lighting it from the top, like this one: https://www.bbqguys.com/looft-usa/looftlighter-charcoal-electric-lighter-and-firestarter.

The exterior and interior grill body and lid are made of uncoated, solid cast aluminum.

Question:
What's the best way to clean the exterior? I've tried soap & vinegar; soap & water; isopropyl alcohol but still can't get rid of the fingerprints and oily hand stains left by the guys who were installing the kamado. It's a shame that it's so hard to keep the exterior from looking so grimy. Any tips appreciated. Was This Helpful?
Answers:

When cleaning your grill, always scrub and polish in the direction of the grain. Wipe down the exterior of the grill to remove any splatter or grease. Do not use harsh abrasives. For tough spots, baked on grease and/or cleaning oxidation (the white splotches that develop on aluminum over time), clean with a mild to medium grit ( scratch resistant) scotch brite pad with a mix of vinegar and water (50/50 mix). Before covering, always allow the surface to dry. DO NOT cover a damp grill. If you are still having trouble after these tips, please feel free to give us a call at 1-877-743-2269.

How many square inches are on the cooking top?Was This Helpful?

The cooking top is approximately 314 square inches.

Question:
OK, I think I know the answer to this question, but let me ask anyway. The specs read (outside dimensions) Width 21 1/8'' and the Depth 27 7/8". The unit appears to be round in width x depth so I assume the overall maximum diameter is 21 7/8" and the depth, 27 7/8" refers to the firebox depth - as in deep?? Also, since I have your attention. How much room behind the kamado do I need to open the lid? I am building a built-in BBQ right up against an existing wall. Was This Helpful?
Answers:

The depth refers to the front to back dimension of the grill. The depth is not the same as the width because the the measurement includes the back hinge and front handle. As far as depth clearance with the lid open, we recommend a minimum of 31-inches from the front of the grill.

When will my item arrive?

Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we've all come to expect for small parcels, so it's important that you're prepared and understand what's required of you well before delivery day.

  • Most freight products ship on a pallet
  • Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
  • We'll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.

For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:

Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can't be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we've only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.

For carriers that deliver without an appointment:

Carriers that deliver without an appointment don't require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren't required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you're home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you're out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
