Its 1/4-inch steel construction guarantees a completely stable and flat cooking surface over 750 square inches. Leak free double-weld construction ensures maximum airflow efficiency and heat retention, meaning you burn less wood for longer. Each Texas Original Pits smoker has hand-welded flanges on the doors to form a seal in order to keep in the heat and smoke. The dimensions in the name signify that this Luling smoker has 16-inch diameter chambers, a 36-inch long main chamber, and 18-inch long firebox. The main cooking chamber comes equipped with two 15 X 17-inch cooking grates while the offset firebox contains one 15 x 16-inch cooking grate and a heavy duty log grate. The offset firebox, by design, gives you the option to cook directly over flame, if you need a nice sear. On top of the firebox sits a built in pot warmer, good for keeping your sauces and sides warm. Dual airflow dampers allow for optimal temperature control and longer life for your fuel. Attached to the lid is the chrome stay-cool spring handle that keeps your hands cool while your smoker is piping hot. Adding to the rustic design, two 12 3/4-inch steel wagon wheels give this smoker mobility, allowing you to please a hungry crowd anywhere. Things We Love:
Texas Original Pits has a story as great as its smokers. The former manufacturing company was hit hard in 2007 when demand for industrial steel equipment in the Texas oil fields decreased, but it stayed in business by transforming its factory into a production facility for hand-forged, offset BBQ smokers. Now every Texas Original Pits model is handcrafted by American workers in Houston, Texas, and the quality is evident in each smoker and fire pit grill they produce.
The bell cow of the Texas Original Pits lineup is the Luling Offset Smoker, which is offered in two sizes indicated below. Measurements refer to the diameter of the barrel, followed by the length of the main cooking chamber, followed by the length of the firebox.
- 16 inches by 36 inches by 18 inches
- 20 inches by 40 inches by 20 inches
The larger unit is also offered in a Fully Loaded package with significant upgrades to the base smoker models. No matter which Luling Offset Smoker you choose, you’ll receive a pit built for the best home smoking experience imaginable.
After just a few minutes with the Luling, it becomes clear that Texas Original Pits has a background in industrial manufacturing. The cooking chamber barrel and firebox are built with ¼-inch thick, construction-grade steel to ensure they retain heat and keep temperature even and steady. This thickness also raises fuel efficiency so you can smoke for longer without adding more fuel. Due to the Luling’s sturdy composition, the main chamber is warranted against burn-through by the manufacturer for a full 10 years.
The Luling is completely hand-welded, which is especially noticeable in the flanged hood. The flange runs the entire length of the main cooking chamber hood and firebox hood, creating a seal that stops smoke and heat from leaking out of the chamber. This is a nice touch in an offset smoker at this price point, plus it adds a functional but still aesthetically pleasing element to the Luling’s design.
Even with such a heavy-duty build, these smokers are surprisingly easy to move around. This is partly because of the smart design Texas Original Pits used in the 12¾-inch steel wagon wheels, but the steel in the smokestack and legs measures three-sixteenths of an inch to keep the weight and price down as well. Luling models are an average of 100 pounds lighter than comparably sized offset smokers, with the larger units weighing just 340 pounds.
With the strong construction comes extra-large cooking areas across all three models. The smaller Luling unit provides 750 square inches of cooking surface, while the larger Luling smoker ups that figure to 1,300 square inches. If you select the Fully Loaded Luling, the addition of the upgraded secondary cooking rack gives you a whopping 1,450 square inches to smoke whatever you like! Are you ready for the challenge?
Texas Original Pits pulled out all the stops to make the Luling one of the most cleverly crafted offset smokers on the market. For instance, the legs without wheels are made slightly shorter than their wheeled counterparts so the main chamber pitches slightly to send grease toward the drain. The grease drain itself is 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches long, ensuring that runoff and even large pieces of debris fall into the hanging pail below without clogging.
Efficient self-cleaning is one thing, but the Luling was designed for versatility too. All models come standard with a 300-square inch cooking rack in the firebox and a heavy-duty log rack if you want to use the firebox as a charcoal grill. There’s also a built-in pot warmer that allows you to keep side dishes warm while smoking or to simply preheat and dry additional logs for the fire.
From there, the Luling is engineered for your convenience — the firebox has a large hinged door for easy access to your fire, and the front shelves are removable so you can store the smoker or fit it through tight spaces. The main cooking grate in the smoking chamber was even created in two pieces, making it much easier to remove from the smoker for cleaning. It’s safe to say the next design flaw we find in a Luling Offset Smoker will be the first.
Fully Loaded Model:
The true star of the Luling collection is the Fully Loaded smoker, which is equipped with several upgrades to greatly increase performance. Foremost among them is the convection heating baffle plate that inserts into the main cooking chamber on the firebox side. This large steel plate has holes of increasing size from right to left, channeling heat and smoke farther down the barrel of the smoking chamber and lessening hot spots near the firebox.
Perhaps the biggest benefit of the baffle plate is that it helps create true convection by pulling heat and smoke from the firebox to a position directly below your meat before they swirl around the barrel and exit the smoke stack. We found that the baffle plate produces extremely even heating throughout the smoker, with less than a 10-degree difference between the right and left sides of the main chamber.
Of course, the Fully Loaded package comes with a few other awesome features. Take a look below and see just how much the Luling Fully Loaded smoker has to offer:
- A chrome probe port for thermometer temperature probes
- A large door counterweight to assist in opening the main chamber lid
- A grease pail that hangs from the drain pipe
- A larger secondary cooking grate for the main chamber
- An additional thermometer to gauge temperature across the entire smoking chamber
- A heavy-duty charcoal/log grate at the bottom of the smoking chamber
With the addition of the main chamber charcoal/log grating, the entire smoker can be operated as a large charcoal grill capable of cooking enough burgers to feed an army of hungry BBQ lovers! This makes the two-piece main cooking grate even more convenient because half of it can be raised or removed to adjust or add more charcoal to the main chamber. We also shouldn’t fail to mention that the upgraded, secondary cooking grate is 144 square inches larger than its base model counterpart. You may need to go on another grocery run before using a Luling Fully Loaded smoker!
We found the Luling Offset Smoker to be an incredibly functional and well-built smoker. Temperature remained even across the barrel, and the smoker held heat well without us having to fuss with the fire much. The flanged hood does a great job of stopping smoke loss through the main chamber lid, while the Stay Cool Spring Handle design keeps your hand safe from transferred heat. Our favorite features include the two-piece main cooking grates, the tough steel wheels that provide a surprising level of portability, and the clever convection baffling plate in the Fully Loaded model. We carry several offset smokers, and the Luling definitely rates among the best.
Texas Original Pits also offers the Pearsall vertical offset smoker line, which is essentially the Luling with a vertical cooking chamber on the left side. The company’s other main products are a portable standing or trailer hitch-mounted Ranger charcoal grill, a Spindletop fire pit grill line, and a handy steel log rack for storing sweet mesquite cookwood!
Things To Consider:
We couldn’t find much to complain about with the Luling line of offset smokers. The main thing to note is that the handle of the firebox door is steel and can be extremely hot to the touch when the firebox is in operation. Remember to wear fire-safe gloves when dealing with charcoal fires or hot surfaces. Still have questions about Luling Offset Smokers?
