How to Measure Patio Furniture For Replacement Cushions

Updating your patio is as easy as replacing the outdoor cushions on your existing patio set. It is a cost-effective and easy option which gives you the ability to store replacement patio cushions and change out the cushions by season. The first step to purchasing any cushions are to ensure you are selecting only those with weather-resistant fabric that is intended for outdoor use.

Once you have located the appropriate cushions in the fabric and style you like, you still must be able to order the sizes which will fit correctly. This handy guide is intended to help make that challenge much easier.

How to Measure a Chair for a Replacement Cushion:

  1. First measure the seat width by placing a rigid tape measure across the seat from left to right.
We recommend adding an inch to your measurement to ensure your cushion fits snugly.
  2. Next measure the seat depth by measuring the chair from front to back.
Again, we'd add an inch here to allow a bit of cushion to hang over the edge for comfort.
  3. If you would like a back cushion for your chair, start by measuring the back width from left to right.
  4. Finally, measure the back height from the top of the chair down to the top of the seat.
Be sure to subtract the thickness of your cushion from your back height or else your cushion will stick up over the top of your chair.

Additional Tips

  • It is important to remember that when measuring for replacement outdoor cushions, the furniture itself is what should be measured. Older patio furniture cushions are not a good indicator of what size you need as they tend to become misshapen over time or may never have been sized properly in the first place.
  • Only a rigid tape measure should be used as a tailor's tape will not measure as accurately.
  • If you do not see the size cushions you need from our Patio Cushions page, call one of our cushion experts at 877-743-2269 with your dimensions ready, and we can order you a set of custom patio cushions.
